STORY-
After seeing Shah Rukh Khan as a very macho policeman on duty in the film, an older and retired Rajinikanth as Muthuvel Pandian who shows cunning to defeat henchmen half his age, director Vijay We have some jailers in Mission: Chapter. 1 Deal with the jail break. The idea of the jailers outnumbering the convicts makes it an attractive arc to tell a police story. But Mission: Chapter 1, through its dull, disjointed and incredibly taxing story, fails to live up to this premise.
Mission: Chapter 1 features some well-known names across various industries. Guna (Arun Vijay) accompanies his daughter Sana (Iyal) to London for her operation. The film, at no point, attempts to understand its protagonist who seems tough and honest but adopts the hawala method to get money for a medical procedure. And from there, the journey of underdeveloped character arcs begins. Nimisha Sajayan as an altruistic nurse from Kerala is a criminally underutilized talent, especially after we saw her in two of last year's best films. When she candidly jokes that she and Guna are neighbors because they come from Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the recipient of the joke is shocked and laughs awkwardly. It also echoed my reaction. We see Amy Jackson's jailer Sandra unable to take control of the compound she's been in charge of for many years, and it's disappointing to see a man take charge, especially when he's the country and New to the law governing him. And if that's not enough, there's a forced Tamil connection given that Sandra is forced to speak this language. There is never a moment when Sandra can manage the crisis breaking out in her prison. Rather, we have this same tendency to be the damsel in distress that requires the hero to jump in and save the day.
